Teethpaste

According to Merriam-Webster:
Toothpaste
Pronunciation: -"pAst
Function: noun
: a paste for cleaning the teeth

From Wikipedia:
Toothpaste is a paste or gel used to clean and improve the aesthetic appearance and health of teeth

Nobady will use it to clean a single tooth??
So... if it used for cleaning teeth, why do they call it toothpaste, why not teethpaste?

sary: lool, but this is for real man!

islamic chocoholic: loooool, bas jad ya3ni inno I need to have an answer for that.

I was told that it is because people used to use it only for the tooth that has been decayed or a tooth with cavity?!!!

Hehehhehe ... This is very funny, and so true too...
Someone decided on the name
The name caught up
People didn't even bother rethinking it... Took it for granted!
Another explanation might be...
a Guy lost all his teeth except one. Then he realized he should brush... So he got paste for his single Tooth ... so it became ... Toothpaste :)

Unfortunately, he lost his last tooth due to excessive brushing

because teeth is plural. we don't say hands lotion or eyes drops or ears medicine...we say hand lotion, eye drops, ear medicine and tooth paste.

qwaider: looool man, and they say that one of the main reasons for loosing that tooth was the braces he used to put.

nas: you are right man, and somehow convincing, but it doesn't make any sense in case of tooth paste. At least you can use the lotion for one hand but no way on earth to use it for one tooth!!!

You can not brush your tooth!!!

lol how do you use lotion on one hand..u need the other to apply it.

Blogger ABOUD said...

Ya man just to apply it, but you are not using it for both hands, and if you have somebody to apply it for you then you don't have to worry about that :)

3abood this is called generalizing.

When you generalize, you refer it to one thing(Singular), and it is known and applied on all (Plural).

Thats the best answer I could come with :)

Nas thanks for giving me the starting point to this.....

o 3aboood....stopppp spending time on coming with silly questions.....Work on your masters rather complaining :D
